Teyla Emmagen is the once proud leader of the Athosian people in the Pegasus Galaxy, which Stargate Command found through a new Stargate that led to the city of Atlantis. Upon meeting John Sheppard, the leader of the human expedition, Teyla found a connection with him, and the rest of the Atlantis expedition. While cautious and slow to trust people, Teyla has helped save her people from the Wraith, the enemy of the Pegasus Galaxy that cull humans and feed off of them.
Teyla was raised by her father Tagan, but she is a descendant of an Athosian whose DNA was experimented on by a rogue Wraith Scientist, giving her an ability to sense the Wraith from a great distance. The Wraith have been a way of life for Teyla for many years, and so she is accostomed to hardship and risking her life for her people. She is a strong and capable warrior, and a confident leader, even though she was reluctant to leave her people to join the Atlantis expedition.
Teyla has spent over three years at Atlantis, and has formed several bonds with different crewmates, including Ronan Dex, Rodney McKay, Dr. Kate Hietlemeyer (Who was recently killed in a bizarre situation with an entity that killed people in their dreams) and most of all, John Sheppard. There is certainly a strong connection between the two, but whether it is beyond friendship is yet to be seen.

Why do you want to play this character?
On top of being a huge Stargate Atlantis fan, I've noticed that most of the women on the island so far are pretty young, and that there are no strong older women to interact with the older guys. I also wanted someone who could easily be a role model for some of the younger "kids" on the island, as well as have survival skills from a slightly more primative culture. Although Tamir does as well, Teyla is a very social and matronly character in some ways, and would be a valued asset as counsel and leader, while also does not mind following orders.
From where in the canon timeline is your character being pulled?
Right after the episode Vengeance in Season Three, which is right before the season finale. She has just had a chance to recover from the experience of being kidnapped by Michael, a Wraith who has a major vendetta against the Atlantis expedition. This is prior to the Replicator attack that forces them to move the entire city to antoher planet, so Teyla is a momentary lull when she is pulled to the island.
